Questions

Straight answers before you book

Everything we would want to know ourselves before renting a bike in a country we do not know.

Licence and safety

Do I need a driving licence?

No. The Evo Lite is limited to 49 km/h. In Vietnam, electric motorbikes in that class may be ridden without a licence from the age of 16, and the e-bike needs no licence either. That is exactly why we picked these two.

One honest note: check what your travel insurance says about riding. Policies differ.

I have never ridden a motorbike. Is that a problem?

The Evo Lite is about as easy as it gets: fully automatic, under 100 kg and limited to 49 km/h. The driver shows you the controls and you can try it in front of your hotel before they leave.

Still not sure? Take the e-bike. If you can ride a bicycle, you can ride it.

Is it safe to ride around Tam Coc?

The roads around Tam Coc are mostly small, flat and slow, with rice fields on both sides. It is nothing like Hanoi. It is still Vietnam, though: expect dogs, chickens, children, buffalo and the occasional truck on the bigger roads.

Ride on the right, wear the helmet (it is the law), take it easy on wet roads, be back before dark and leave the bike at the hotel if you are going for beers.

How old do I have to be?

16 or older to ride the electric motorbike. The motorbike seats two people and comes with two helmets.

Booking and paying

How do I pay, and is the price final?

The price on this site is the price you pay: per ride, per day, with delivery and pickup included. Nothing is charged online and we never ask for a card.

You pay the driver when your ride is delivered, in cash in Vietnamese dong. If you happen to have a Vietnamese banking app, a bank transfer works too.

Do I have to hand over my passport?

No. The driver takes a photo of your passport (or your driving licence) when the ride is delivered. The original stays in your pocket.

How late can I book?

Until midnight for delivery the next morning. Bookings are passed on to the rental shop early every morning, so a booking for the same day is not possible through this site.

Can I cancel or change my booking?

Yes, and it costs nothing, because you have not paid anything yet. Message the rental shop on WhatsApp as early as you can, ideally the evening before. Their number is in your confirmation email.

Can I rent for more than one day?

Yes, up to 14 days in one booking. The ride stays at your hotel overnight and you get a charger with it. You pay the full amount to the driver on the first day.

Delivery and pickup

Where do you deliver?

To any hotel or homestay in Tam Coc and in Ninh Binh city, free of charge. Staying somewhere else nearby? Book anyway and put it in the notes. The rental shop will contact you if they cannot reach you.

What time is my ride delivered and collected?

You pick a delivery time from 7:00 to 10:00 in the morning when you book. Pickup is in the evening of your last day, at your hotel, at a time you agree with the driver at delivery.

What do I need to have ready?

Your passport (for the photo) and the rental amount in cash. That is all.

On the road

What if the battery runs out?

It is unlikely. The motorbike does up to about 200 km on a charge according to VinFast, and a full day around Tam Coc is 30 to 60 km. For longer rentals you get the charger, which plugs into a normal socket at your hotel, and the rental shop swaps a battery free of charge once a day if you need it.

What if it rains?

Two raincoats come with every ride. Showers here are usually short. Roads get slippery when wet, so slow down and brake gently.

What if something breaks, or I get a flat tyre?

Your confirmation email has the WhatsApp number of the rental shop. Send them a message with where you are and they will help you. The bikes are as good as new, so this should be rare.

What about damage or theft?

As with any rental, you are responsible for damage or loss that is your fault, and you settle that with the rental shop. Two habits keep it simple: look the bike over together with the driver at delivery and take a few photos, and always lock it and take the key when you park.
